A substantial 19th Century Masons Ironstone Hydra Jug or Pitcher

This is a 19th Century, large and substantial, Mason's Ironstone Hydra jug or pitcher in the Basket Japan pattern.

The jug has a notched snake handle and is decorated in the distinctive "Basket Japan" pattern, using bold painted enamels of cobalt blue, green and burnt orange all in various shades.

The jug is generally in good condition but the base shows signs of useage. The colours are vibrant and the rim is clear from chips or repair and the handle is solid. However there is some paint running from the hydra head and blue swirl towards the base as shown in the photographs. It is still an attractive item that is practical or decorative.
